When I was a resident I used to tease the interns by telling them
that a bus full of pregnant women just got in an accident and now
they are all on their way to the hospital and they are pre-term and
contracting. Today I got paid back for all my practical
joking... It was around 1800 and we had just finished a Spinerval cycling workout in the gym when we heard those two most detested words, "EMT, TOC." "You have 6 urgent litter patients, ETA 10 minutes." Oh shit. I had always wondered what would happen if there was a mass casualty scenario around this time of the day. We had a bunch of people in the gym, and even more in the chow hall. I grabbed my gear and started to head back from the hospital. As I headed around the corner of the chow hall, I noticed something amazing. There was a bus sitting outside the chow hall. There is a bus service on this post, but the buses are few and far between. In fact, I have not been inside one of those buses in at least 8 or 9 months. I picked up the pace to get to the bus before I left. As I was boarding the bus, a mass of CSH people departed the chow hall and joined me on the bus. Soon we were off on our way back to the CSH. I arrived at the CSH and the hospital was already full of people. It is pretty impressive how we can have all those people there and all of their contributions are important. I went to the ER to try to find out more information on the 6 patients. There was no information on the nature of the wounds. However, at that time, more information came across saying that there were 14 more casualties in addition to the initial 6. Uh oh. Apparently a suicide bomber had driven into a bus full of Kurdish Militiamen (aka Pechmurga). |
